"I guess we're still on Earth...." they say as they see two totally gnarly surfer dudes come over the hill.
I watched this movie in two stages. I started with about 40 minutes or so one night before I eventually fell asleep...and the rest was watched the next day. I'd say the beginning of the movie was way better than the ending, at which point it is almost like the acting completely falls apart. And honestly - can't someone tell Rutger Hauer that his hair is awful? Also he must be like 60 pounds overweight for his character's role. I'm not even looking at the script and I can tell you that is that case. I bet the guy who put this movie together was just pooping with joy that he landed a "star", when it would have been better if they got someone with a better haircut and someone who weighed less.
Sorry, this is not how I expected this review to go. Let me start over. The idea for this movie was really good. It's actually one of my favorite kinds of movies. Where the main character doesn't really understand what is going on but others around him do...and also where the main character remains "who they are" despite the situation. Both of these feels were portrayed throughout this movie. And honestly, if they would have done it better overall, this could have easily been a high B-rated movie. But instead the acting just didn't cut it and the plot sort of fell apart and was uninteresting by the end. Once they started that staff and crystal stuff with the guy in the suit, it went down hill. But the building of the plot was quite glorious (first half).
This was a mix between Gor, Time Bandits, Jumper, and that movie with Matt Damon and the different doors. The main character, an unsuspecting kid from modern day (who could have been cast WAY better if you ask me), gets twarted into an ever-changing world. Moving from present to past, from desert to cave, etc. Basically his Dad did it before him and he is the chosen one, but doesn't know it. It takes him most of the beginning of the movie to figure out what is going on, and that what he has been witnessing and doing is actually happening. They do a good job of jumping from landscape to landscape, that is until the guy with the suit fights the unsuspecting kid and they totally overuse the scene back-and-forthness.
Also Jack Black was in this.
Random side note: I would redo the Wickerman and have the cop fake-turn-into one of the town folk, that is until he has the greenlight to get out of their village at night in the water, which takes hours and is suspenseful. But the scenes where he is acting all crazy as if he was one of them, just to fit in long enough for his escape....damn, those scenes will be beautiful.

#139 Gor (B)
Now hold on....exactly 10 minutes in, why are they fighting with that jewel out in the open like that?
Roll over Magnum PI, here comes a real winner. Gor is in the house! Ok, going to push play again....starting just when he landed in that strange world after leaving his horrible past life, which basically was the torture of living in the 80's. How much happier could this guy be? Bullied, bothered, he knew and they wouldn't listen....BOOOOOM...now he's in Gor land. Or, is he GOR????????
Surrounded by three crazily armed guys with medieval helmets and horses, this dude calls out, "I'm a physics professor...here, I'll show you my license." What a tool bag.
Reminder to self, see Zardoz, Xeiram, Thor: Mighty Warrior, Star Crash, and Krull again.
best line ever...a la Tom Hanks in his best work....NO LIE, just believe in the story and what I'm saying, and it's as good as effing Tommy Hanks: "Are you friends with Norman......? Did he put you up to this?" Meanwhile, he just killed a freaking son of Solum. He actually reminds me of a Will Ferrell type here, or Michael Cera. Perhaps this film inspired Year One? Ha!
I will say this about the movie Gor, it not only held my interest, but it made me feel as if I was on a wild ride. I know I say this a lot but if you are willing to realize the genre and age of this movie, open your mind, and able to just jump in for a journey - then you will enjoy Gor. However, for being PG, I do believe I saw boobs at one point...so that was unnecessary and didn't match the rating for sure. It was almost a movie you could have your older young kids watch. Almost like Krull, minus a boob.
Oh, by the way, Gor is the world he warps to after his car crash. An odd name and I would have named him Gor for his Zarnian name. Shit, the dude learned to outlast the Outlaws and Nomads! He deserves an awesome name.

Hunter Prey 2010 (sci-fi wow) #128 (A)
Hi all, I need to confess that I most definitely will not be able to make the projected and anticipated milestone of 200 total movies by the July 5th deadline. But I am going to keep striving and shooting for the stars! And I am going to keep watching. Likely I will go beyond 200 and just keep reviewing - but certainly #200 is going to be special indeed. Admittedly, this challenge was harder than I thought. There ended up being some pretty ferocious nighttime (free-time) distractions. AKA baseball started coupled with hockey and basketball being in playoff format...thus, all around making it tough for me to pull off 20+ movies a month.
I also wanted to mention before I get into the discussion about the sci-fi thriller: Hunter Prey - that I went to see the Room by Tommy Wiseau last night in the theatre. Holy crud! We could barely hear the movie because of all of the laughter. People are really trying to make this the new Rocky Horror. I do believe I got hit with about 17 spoons from the rafters. Hella time! Totally recommended and if they do it every year, I'm there!!
Now onto the review:
"I hope you rot in the belly of Gods.........."......."sir"........holy shit!
Think Prometheus. It's just like that! At least, my hope is that it remains this way. They have been reaching deep so far. "Deep" as in the second the movie started - the action begin and it hasn't let up since! Seriously, this is intense AND happening all throughout the daytime, which is something that gets extra credit points for me and my movie viewing experience. Show me horror or crazy sci-fi, edge of seat gripping action, and put it in the daytime! I am so there. Wow - I just found out who was under those masks...and it's not B. Brian Blair. And then...
HOLY CRAP! You have to watch this. Avengers....hahaha...too funny. Avengers got nothing on this movie. Fantastic Four.....LOL. The Hulk, oh man....actually to me The Hulk wasn't too bad considering all the other bad superhero movies out there. Really this is more sci-fi though, so that rant is a bit off. Ahahahahaha - Is that Dennis Quaid? Man, he gets all the old good roles. I'm proud of him. DENNIS QUAID IS HERE! (Looked it up, it is not Dennis Quaid.)
this is a must must must watch...we are talking sci-fi genius in cinema. Someone on Netflizzle (c) called it low budget (after they gave it 5 stars)...but I'm not sure that is accurate, or rather who cares? It's a good movie. And that user review might be right - it s like Enemy Mine part 3.
I should probably start over with this review but just trust me and watch this. Just worry about the fact that I said this was good and I gave it an A. If you like sci-fi, watch this movie. It's called HUNTER PREY. WAY better than Jim Caviezel in Outlander and WAY better than Pandorum. The movie actually seems like it was from the 70's....but surprisingly it is from 2010. They do a great visual job of making it seem produced from 1974 or something.
Another quick note about why this movie is awesome - they hide characters from you making the viewer guess who they are. When they are revealed it's fantastic. Everyone evil in the movie looks more real than Ron Perlman when he's all done up in most of his roles - yes, to me they did that good of a job. This is the sci-fi-star-wars-like-ride that I've been missing for some years. But how can they get away with having the ship named Prometheus?

Krull / #126 (B)
Good fighters make bad husbands indeed...
I've started this movie like 15 times on instant stream....each time - like the movie Dune - I make it around 5 minutes through. Today I'm going to see if I can get in over 30 and hope that something exciting happens and I remain enthralled. Also, it's PG so I'm going to play it mid-day with the kids in the room. So far, 3 of them have stood and watched for short stints of time. We shall see what happens with the remainder of this attempt, shalln't we?
Guys walking up walls, rather floating...that's cool! Didn't expect that... This isn't much of a fight. Crazy armored bad guys with spiky helmets who can float up things vs. seemingly helpless towns folk who are basically standing there with wimpy garb and swords. Haha, they are not even attempting to swing their swords at them. Also, the bad guys have blasters. This doesn't even seem remotely fair. I'm not sure the good guys even have blasters - wait, there is lightning coming out of their swords. So there's that.
23 mins in and I got 4 kids and 1 adult watching. We are enthralled. Let's go Krull...make our whole family have an experience we can cherish forever! WOAH, watch out for those boulders buddy!!! Dodge, weave!! Shwew! Close call. Man, I wish I lived in a fantasy world like this guy. This is the best.
Was reading some Netflix (c) users reviews...it's a toss up for this one apparently. Some say 1 star and state that it's clearly a take on Star Wars (??). Some diehards say 4 stars and that it's a great adventure and they remember it from whence they were littlens.
My over all take on movie 126 is a B. Good plot and fun adventure. Kids (mostly the oldest one) loved it. I put it up there with stuff like the Neverending Story (although I've never seen it), Legend, or something like the Labyrinth. But of course Labyrinth is an A rated flick.

106 / John Carpenter's They Live (C-)
Roddy Roddy Piper at his acting peak finest, laughing out loud! Damn, the scary parts are really well done, where people's faces look like skeletons when Roddy puts on "special glasses" - aka this is when he knows that they live...but the rest of the acting is SUPER corny. It's like good plot meets bad plot - and good filming/scenes meets bad filming/scenes. Also, they play the same damn background music the ENTIRE movie. Five total individual notes repeated - three total different tones/keys played - and then a computer generated snapping sound to finish it off...then repeat that multiplied by one plus hours. Awful!! Damn, once I focused on that sound, I almost turned it off or pushed mute. Totally awfully bad movie producing decision with that music. But, to give some credit here I'll take a bit of a softer stance. From a uniqueness standpoint, this one is definitely unique. From a, 'I-like-horror-movies-and-want-to-see-even-the-bad-ones-because-I-don't-care' side of things, this one is worth watching...thus, if you can look past the cheesy humans and their acting, perhaps you should give this one a try??
At one point, Roddy Roddy is trying to convince his buddy (played by Keith David who I definitely recognize from somewhere) to wear these special 80's looking sunglasses and his buddy doesn't want to, so they fight on the street for about 27 minutes...almost like something out of a wrestling match. At the end, Roddy says, "Brother, life's a bitch...and she's back in heat."
Don't watch this movie - rather watch this youtube (c) video of this awesome cinema fight scene: They Live awesome fight scene - 27 Minutes LONG (just kidding) courtesy of the MovieExpressPodcast guys from Youtube (c).
If they remake this, I would watch it....bet it would be 1,000 times better. Here is a shot of the badass bad guys:

Arena / 48 (C+)
Pretty awesome I guess. However, it was pretty slow. They put a lot of effort into the uniforms and monster suits etc., but I guess overall the movie was what should be expected of a movie about a short order cook that becomes the next human intergalactic UFC (c) champion.
It's all about the handicapping for sure.
good quote: "...As long as there are Steve Armstrong's out there in the universe, there will always be contenders."
Now that this piece is over, I don't think I ever need to see it again - but I do have an itching to watch Star Crash on VHS. I wonder if he ever gave that back to me?

Videodrome #22 (C-)
WTH was up with this movie? I can't tell if it was good or bad. I guess it was a mix between the two, mostly due to the age of the film. There were odd items, starting with the stomach pouch bizarreness:

If I had a gripe to make, I would tell them to stop saying "videodrome" over and over and over again throughout the plot. I don't know what to say about this movie, other than I think I'd rather watch the Stuff, From Beyond, Trailer Park Boys, or Mars Attacks. Good night.
